Steve Levet, Levet Contracting

Levet Contracting provides cultivation and hay services, digging and excavation along with fertiliser spreading.  Steve also rears calfs on their 62 Ha home farm. They’ve been in business for 33 years, starting off by making hay in the early 1980’s. The fleet has grown to three New Holland Tractors, a Hino 4×4 spreader, a 12 tonne excavator and a transporter. This keeps two full time staff busy throughout the year, with casual staff joining the team in the busy season.

Raised on a farm in Te Hana, Steve started his working life as a farm cadet in the Bay of Islands before moving to Agricultural Contracting. Following this, Steve moved back to Wellsford in the 1980’s and started Levet Contracting.

Married to Gladys, they have a family of four adult children and five grand kids.  Steve gains the most pride from his involvement in the local community.  Steve is the National President of the Rural Agriculture Contractors Association.  The Levet family have been associated with the region for 150 years, a feat that Steve helped to celebrate by Chairing the Albertlander 150th reunion Committee. Steve is a current Wellsford Lions Club member and previous President of the Branch.

The sense of community pride is carried through to Steve’s business. He gains a strong sense of satisfaction from a job well done, and through the people he meets. If he was to hold a BBQ and invite any-one, living or dead, Steve would invite his mates.  These mates go back 35 years to when he started working in Northland.

Steve’s advice to anyone starting in the industry is to have passion for what you do. That passion will carry you through the tough times. If he was to start over again, Steve said that he might have made more money staying as a dairy farmer! The key change Steve would make is to have a workshop and yard separate from home.
