TeenAg Grand Final Taupo 2015

Just after 7am on Friday 3rd July, 42 high school aged contestants descended on the Taupo Domain, ready to battle it out to become the TeenAg Champions. Having already competed at a regional level, the top 3 teams from each of the 7 regions were put through their paces at this National event. This included sitting a 50 minute exam, competing in a head-to-head series of challenges, and 7 individual modules which included milking a cow, showing their skills in a tractor & drafting. On top of this, they also competed in the Southfuels module where they were marked on their ability to test for and treat contaminated fuel. The day was capped off with a 2 minute speech (with topics given 1 hour before) where Charlotte Mayne our General Manager of Business Development acted as a judge.

It was fantastic to see the high calibre of the contestants, and we were reassured that the future of New Zealand farming is in good hands. Our onsite coffee cart & hosting marquee provided parents and supporters with an opportunity to warm up while watching the action, and the BBQ was running red hot over the lunch break. That evening we attended the inaugural prize giving for this part of the competition, at which Charlotte had the opportunity to speak on behalf of the company. A big congratulations goes out to Thomas Slee & William Brown from Southland Boys High School as the 2015 winners. In addition, prizes were also given to the winners of each section.

We are now in our second year of sponsorship of this event which is held alongside the prestigious New Zealand Young Farmer of the Year competition. It was fantastic to see both the Southfuels and Northfuels brands being represented fully at this nationwide event. With next year’s grand final set for Timaru, we are already looking forward to coming up with some new challenges to put the next round of contestants through.
